Things to Do

Tibbie Shiels Inn is a picturesque and wonderfully situated spot in Selkirk, in the Scottish Borders. Steeped in history and natural beauty, it boasts a wide variety of activities to suit those with a gentle curiosity as well as the more adventurous among you….. Listed below is just a small sample of what the area has to offer. For a more detailed list, visit the Tibbie Shiels Website here https://tibbieshielsinn.com/things-to-do

Dawyck House & Botanical garden: Located in the hills of the Scottish Borders, Dawyck enjoys an almost continental climate comprising warm dry summers followed by cold, snowy winters. Plants from the mountainous regions of Europe, China, Nepal, Japan and North America thrive here.

Same Ling Tibetan Monastery: Founded in 1967 the Centre is located in a peaceful valley on the banks of the river Esk in Scotland. Kagyu Samye Ling was the first Tibetan Buddhist Centre to have been established in the West. It is currently under the guidance of Abbot Choje Lama Yeshe Losal Rinpoche

Philliphaugh Estate: Across the hills and magnificently sat above the Selkirk landscape is Philiphaugh Estate, dripped in history and beauty. The Strang Steel family have dedicated their lives to preserving this stunning landscape, the wildlife and building a close connection with the local community. Today the estate is surrounded by arable land, woodlands, farms and grouse moorland. Man has left his mark here for thousands of years and beneath the rich soil are Roman remains, an Anglian Village hall, but the Estate is most famous for the Battle of Philiphaugh in 1645.

Walk around St Mary’s Loch (7mile): Set in a remote location half way along the Selkirk to Moffat road, St Mary's Loch ranks amongst the most attractive lochs in the Borders. Recently opened paths enable walkers to make a complete circuit of the loch with only short sections on the road - a fine walk. The route as described here includes a couple of detours to visit an old kirkyard and a ruined tower house - these could be omitted if required to reduce the length of the walk by 2.5km or so.

The Southern Upland Way (maybe not all of it): Running across 214 miles of superb and varied country the Southern Upland Way is still undiscovered by many. It starts from Portpatrick on the south west coast and finishes at Cockburnspath on the east. There are no summits above 3000ft, but over 80 rise above 2000ft. The Way provides a real challenge for the experienced. On the other hand, some sections are ideal for families and the less ambitious. Experienced walkers consider the route to be one of the most challenging of Scotland’s Great Trails.

The Grey Mare’s Tail: The waterfall, one of the UK’s highest, plunges 60m down into the Moffat Water Valley. This dramatic upland landscape was created by glacial erosion over millions of years and unfolds further up steep slopes past the waterfall to picturesque Loch Skeen. Towering above the loch are the peaks of Lochcraig Head, Mid Craig and the summit of White Coomb (821m), with breathtaking views extending as far as the Lake District and Northumberland to the south.
